Pickleball in Mesa and Gilbert: What to know and where to play

The growing popularity of pickleball has led to the construction of more courts in city parks, catering to the game's wide appeal among different age groups. Mesa has recently added 12 new pickleball courts across two of its parks, contributing to the city's total of 66 courts. These new courts, alongside existing ones, offer various reservation and walk-in options, with fees for certain times and locations. While some parks require reservations, others operate on a first-come, first-served basis, and a few parks allow players to use painted pickleball lines on basketball courts if they bring their own nets. Gilbert also accommodates pickleball players with 16 courts at Gilbert’s Regional Park, available on a first-come, first-served basis. Both cities have established guidelines to manage court usage and ensure that all players get a fair chance to play.

Scottsdale’s International School of Arizona turns 25

Joao Eras-Jorge, a mechanical engineer, founded the International School of Arizona in a church basement in Mesa in 1998 to provide French education for his children. Despite initial skepticism, he established the school with a 100% French immersion program. The school, which now also offers Spanish, has grown to 340 students and is celebrating its 25th anniversary. It emphasizes bilingualism and global citizenship with a unique educational model that involves teaching in a foreign language. Accredited by the French Ministry of Education and The Cervantes Institute in Spain, the school aims to develop students with a set of six core attributes, preparing them to engage with the world confidently and with curiosity. This year's anniversary theme, "Seasons of Love," reflects on the mix of joy and sorrow experienced worldwide in recent years.

School restroom accommodations plan fails

A tie vote at the Scottsdale Unified School District board meeting resulted in the failure of a proposed policy to provide special restroom accommodations upon request, with board president Julie Cieniawski absent. Vice President Carine Werner's proposal aimed to give students the option to request a special restroom arrangement with written permission from parents. Critics argued the proposal was costly and unnecessary, as only a fraction of students had requested accommodations and current policies suffice. The board did, however, unanimously approve the purchase of pickup trucks and renew a program supporting students with disabilities in finding employment.

In the Arizona 5A flag football final, Gilbert Campo Verde defeated Canyon View in a tight 14-13 game, overturning an early season defeat. Campo Verde's junior Madison Coger was pivotal with two 60-yard touchdowns, two interceptions, and a decisive blocked extra point. Despite a powerful offense, Canyon View couldn't overcome the well-executed defensive strategy of Campo Verde, suggesting a bright future for the program.

Valley Vista volleyball runs into wall in Gilbert

The No. 10 seed Valley Vista volleyball team, boasting a 12-5 record, was defeated 3-0 by the No. 7 seed Gilbert Perry in the first round of the 6A volleyball playoffs. Despite a strong start and a close first set, Valley Vista couldn't maintain their momentum, ultimately falling in the subsequent sets with scores of 25-12 and 25-10. Valley Vista’s coach, David Chavez, expressed the need for consistency after the team's performance fluctuated throughout the match. With the loss, Valley Vista ends their season, while Gilbert Perry advances to play No. 2 seed Xavier Prep in the second round. Valley Vista will be losing several key senior players to graduation but will retain a deep roster for the next season. Perry's coach, Fred Mann, acknowledged his team's need for improvement as they prepare for a challenging matchup against Xavier Prep.
