Goodbye grass? Gilbert and SRP partner in rebates up to $6,000

Gilbert is collaborating with the Salt River Project (SRP) to offer local businesses rebates of up to $6,000 for grass removal, as part of water conservation efforts in light of diminishing Colorado River levels. Over the next five years, they have set aside $75,000 for this initiative. Susan Pasternack and her HOA utilized such a rebate program for non-residential grass removal, which will lead to a yearly water savings of 200,000 gallons. Initially, Gilbert's program offered a $3,000 rebate to encourage non-residential entities to replace grass with low-water-use landscapes, and now SRP will match this amount, raising the total rebate to $6,000. Each square foot of grass removal can save approximately 50 gallons of water annually. This initiative supports SRP's goal to conserve 5 billion gallons of water by 2035. Gilbert is the pioneer city in this partnership, but SRP is considering collaborations with more cities. Interested local businesses and HOAs can apply, given that the project is new and adheres to specific criteria. Gilbert also offers other rebate programs targeting residential grass removal and smart irrigation systems. Earlier, the town sought a $3 million state grant to transition over 500,000 square feet of unutilized grass on town property to desert-suitable landscaping, potentially saving 28 million gallons of water annually.

Gilbert, AZ - The Largest Town In America
Gilbert, Arizona, recognized as the largest town in America, boasts a population that rivals St. Louis, Missouri. It began as a railroad spot on William Gilbert's land in 1902, grew as the "Hay Shipping Capital of the World" during WWI, and was incorporated as a town in 1920. The town's unusual borders were formed in the 70s when Mayor Halleck annexed land to protect Gilbert's boundaries. From just one streetlight in 1983, the population exploded fivefold by 1990. Currently, Gilbert's infrastructure is more modern than many neighbors, and despite its size, it has not opted to become a city, valuing its "small town" identity.
Local Gilbert Leadership Seeks Donations and Parade Candy for Upcoming Gilbert Days Parade

The Gilbert Days Parade is on November 18th, and Gilbert Leadership is creating a "Rock n Roll" themed float. They need donations, aiming for $1500, to offset material costs. The parade team requires candy/small toys (around 4000 pieces) for distribution, and also welcomes children and teens to participate. Monetary donations can be made at this link, selecting "Parade Float" as the reason. For support or inquiries, contact Rob Elder at [email protected]. The GL Parade Committee appreciates any assistance.
