Native American Management Internship Program Celebrates 10 Years

The Gilbert Native American Management Internship (NAMI) program in Gilbert, Arizona, is celebrating its 10-year anniversary. This innovative program was established in collaboration with the Salt River Pima Maricopa Indian Community. It aims to provide Native American students with opportunities to learn about public service and government, introducing them to innovative management practices. Octavia Freeland, a Diné member of the Navajo Nation and a current NAMI intern, reflects on her experiences and the insights gained since joining the program in September. The program has hosted 36 interns from diverse tribes including Apache Nation, Colorado River Indian Tribes, and the Navajo Nation, among others.

Native American Heritage Month, celebrated in November, emphasizes the recognition and celebration of Indigenous cultures, languages, and stories. The Gilbert community is encouraged to engage with this cultural heritage by exploring books by Indigenous authors and learning about Indigenous culture, supported by a special collection at the Maricopa County Library District. Gilbert's proximity to various Indigenous communities, including the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Community, enhances its connection and engagement with Native American culture and history

Gilbert's Williams Field High 'stuffs the bus' for United Food Bank

In a heartwarming display of community spirit and generosity, Williams Field High School in Gilbert, Arizona, has once again successfully executed its cherished tradition, "Stuff the Bus." This event, integral to the school's culture for over a decade, involves students, staff, and the community coming together to collect nonperishable food items. This year, their efforts were exceptionally fruitful, amassing over 10,000 pounds of food, all of which were donated to the United Food Bank. This significant contribution aids in addressing food insecurity, particularly during critical times of the year.

The initiative is not just about food collection; it embodies the core values of dedication and selflessness, as noted by the school's principal. It provides students with a profound sense of belonging and the realization that their efforts can make a real difference in their community. The National Honor Society of Williams Field High School has been spearheading this project, ensuring its success each year. This year's collection included a variety of items, ranging from canned goods to staples like pasta, flour, and sugar, which were also distributed to local soup kitchens.

The culmination of the event is marked by an "Un-Stuffing the Bus" activity at the United Food Bank, where the class contributing the most cans gets the honor of participating. This experience extends beyond mere donation; it offers participants a chance to explore the food bank and understand the transformative journey of their collected items into vital nourishment for those in need. The event, thus, serves as an educational and unifying experience for all involved, further strengthening the bond between the school and the wider community
