Hospice of the Valley becomes hospice provider for Banner Health

Hospice of the Valley (HOV), a renowned hospice care provider, has expanded its reach through a new partnership with Banner Health, set to commence on December 1. This collaboration will see HOV become the hospice provider for Banner Health in both the Phoenix and Tucson areas. The transition is designed to be smooth, with Banner Hospice staff integrating into HOV, ensuring continuous care for current Banner patients.

With a history of serving over 22,000 patients and their families annually, Hospice of the Valley offers care that encompasses the patient’s medical, emotional, and spiritual needs, primarily in the comfort of their homes. As one of the largest not-for-profit hospices in the nation, HOV has been dedicated to its mission of bringing comfort, dignity, and compassionate care to the community since its founding in 1977. Their policy of not turning anyone away, regardless of insurance status or financial capacity, underlines their commitment to accessible care.

Beyond traditional hospice care, HOV has expanded its services to support individuals with serious, chronic illnesses and those at all stages of dementia. They assist in transitions from hospital to home and provide specialized pediatric and perinatal programs. The organization also offers various therapies, including massage, aromatherapy, and music, to improve the quality of life for patients. They have bilingual care teams for Spanish speakers and play an educational role by instructing medical students in palliative and hospice care.

Additionally, Hospice of the Valley offers a range of no-cost community programs, including grief support, senior placement services, and assistance with living wills. They are unique in providing 24/7 phone support with a nurse, ensuring comprehensive support for families throughout their care journey.

Water, garbage fee increases headed to Gilbert

Gilbert residents will soon face higher utility costs as the Town Council has approved phased-in increases in water and solid waste fees. Starting this spring, water bills will rise by 50%, accompanied by an $8.50 hike in solid waste collection fees. This decision, passed in a narrow 4-3 vote, is part of a strategy to address the town's utility financial challenges.

The plan includes issuing an $80 million bond, complemented by a $70,000 educational campaign to inform residents about the changes. A public workshop is scheduled for January 24, with the new rates effective from April 1.

Two funding options were considered: a direct cash-funded method leading to a 130% increase in water bills, and a gradual cash/bond increase plan. The council opted for the latter, which will see an average water bill increase of $17 in the first year. This approach is expected to generate significant revenue starting in Fiscal Year 2029 and contribute to a repair and replacement fund.

A key factor in these rate increases is the escalating cost of the North Water Treatment Plant project, now at $677 million. Despite concerns over accruing debt, the council found the situation warranted bond financing. Mayor Brigette Peterson, favoring the all-cash option, expressed her unease with new debt but emphasized the need to address these financial challenges. The council's decision reflects a balance between immediate revenue generation and the long-term financial stability of Gilbert's
