Pickleball, Pools, and Parks: Gilbert's Blueprint for Recreational Enhancement

In Gilbert, Arizona, officials are responding to a surge in demand for recreational amenities from the town's rapidly growing population. The community's requests include more pickleball courts, a new aquatics center, and a southeast recreation center. Overcrowded facilities and programs highlight the urgency of these needs. Significant increases in both event attendance and program participation emphasize the community's engagement.
Key projects include the completion of Gilbert Regional and Desert Sky parks, featuring diverse amenities like dog parks and skate plazas. The town's 10-year parks and recreation master plan is undergoing updates, with public input shaping future developments.
Despite progress, challenges remain, such as catering to the evolving needs of the town's youth and ensuring a balance between growth and recreational resources. The council is exploring various funding strategies, including attracting tourists to parks for revenue generation and potentially collaborating with HOAs for pool access.
Gilbert considers sales-tax increase, bond for high priority projects
The town of Gilbert, Arizona, is considering a proposal to introduce a sales tax increase and a general-obligation bond to its voters. This initiative aims to generate funds exceeding $1 billion. The primary focus of these funds will be to support high-priority projects across the police, fire, and parks departments

Rising Litter on East Valley Highways Calls for Immediate Action

The East Valley has been facing a noticeable litter problem along its highways, particularly on stretches of U.S. 60 and the 101 freeway. Michael Forney, a local delivery service owner, first spotted the issue, which was later confirmed by ADOT spokesperson Steve Elliott. The increase in litter was attributed to the abrupt cessation of services by ADOT's previous contractor, Anderson Enterprises, in September.
In response, ADOT contracted Reyes and Sons in November to tackle the accumulating litter. This shift marks a significant effort to clean the busy freeways, which are unsuitable for volunteer cleanup efforts due to safety concerns.
Steve Elliott emphasized the importance of community action in preventing litter, encouraging people to properly dispose of their waste. For those interested in more direct involvement, ADOT provides information on its Adopt a Highway program for volunteer opportunities.
As the cleanup operation continues, this situation highlights the collective responsibility of residents and travelers in maintaining the cleanliness and appeal of these vital roadways.

Gilbert Police Add Magic to Family's Move with Elf Rescue

In a delightful display of community spirit in Gilbert, Arizona, the local police played a key role in a unique family event. The McMahon family, having recently moved from Oregon, realized their beloved Elf on the Shelf was missing. Inspired, father Jason McMahon contacted the Gilbert police, requesting a playful 'extradition' of the elf.
Embracing the spirit of the request, police officers staged a mock operation, bringing the elf back to the McMahon's new home. Eight-year-old Ava McMahon joyfully identified the elf, who was humorously implicated in an attempted 'break-in' at their old house in Oregon.
The light-hearted scene, with Ava and her friends delighted at the sight of the elf in a police car, brought smiles all around. The family expressed their gratitude to the police for this imaginative gesture, highlighting the joy it added to their new chapter in Gilbert.
