Community Outcry Leads to Renewed Probe into Gilbert Teen Assaults by 'Goons

In Gilbert, Arizona, a series of brutal teen attacks, allegedly perpetrated by a group known as the "Gilbert Goons," has led to the reopening of a previously shelved police investigation. The group, consisting of over 20 affluent teenagers, has been linked to random assaults on other teens in various public places, including the notorious beating of 16-year-old Preston Lord in Queen Creek. Despite these ongoing incidents, none of the Goons have been arrested or named as suspects in any case.

The Gilbert Police Department initially set the investigation aside due to a lack of leads but revived it following a report by the Arizona Republic. The father of one victim, who had to send his son overseas for safety, expressed frustration with the police's handling of the situation. He criticized the lack of action despite the attackers posting evidence on social media.

Police Chief Michael Soelberg stated that victims did not specifically mention the Goons when reporting the attacks, and the department has no reports directly linking the group to criminal activity. The Republic's investigation revealed a pattern in the attacks, including similar locations and victims, and the involvement of the same perpetrators.

The police department's response has been under scrutiny, with conflicting statements and a lack of proactive measures. They launched a webpage on "Teen Violence Investigations" but did not directly address the Goons in initial statements. The community, including parents and activists, has expressed dissatisfaction with the police's approach, emphasizing the need for more proactive measures to protect teens from such violent groups.

Funding Dilemma: Gilbert Explores Options for Essential Community Projects

In Gilbert, Arizona, a pressing concern for the local government is the need to fund over $1 billion in capital projects, aimed at enhancing recreational amenities and maintaining high standards in police and fire services. The town council, in a recent all-day workshop, reviewed various project needs and pondered over funding mechanisms, including the possibilities of bonding and a sales tax increase.

Finance Director Kelly Pfost highlighted the critical need for these investments, stating that Gilbert's public safety and parks requirements alone amount to around $1 billion. The town is grappling with the challenges of aging infrastructure (average age being 24 years), inflation in construction costs, and the need to cater to a growing community that is expected to reach its full development within the next decade.

Various options were discussed to finance these essential projects. These include reducing the scope of projects, delaying or canceling them, applying for grants, or resorting to general obligation bonds, which would require voter approval and would be repaid through the secondary property tax. Another alternative is the use of municipal bonds, repaid with General Fund money, needing only council and Municipal Property Corporation board approval.

Pfost also introduced a hybrid payment plan involving bonds and a sales tax increase. For instance, raising the sales tax rate to 1.95% could generate $550 million, while a $450 million bond would cover the remaining costs. Any sales tax hike would require voter endorsement. The council is considering a sales tax that would be imposed on hotels, retail, phone, and utilities.

However, the idea of raising taxes or bonds is met with skepticism due to the public's current financial concerns and a recent history of bond failures in nearby school districts. The council is also exploring the potential for private sector partnerships or leasing buildings instead of constructing new ones, as ways to reduce costs.

The town council and staff are committed to finding a balanced approach that prioritizes essential projects while considering the community's capacity and willingness to fund these initiatives. The final decision on how to fund these critical projects is yet to be made, with further discussions and presentations expected in upcoming meetings.

Rebranding Effort in Politics: 'America’s Shaman' Eyes Congress Seat

Jacob Angeli-Chansley, once known as the "QAnon Shaman" during the January 6 insurrection, is reinventing himself as "America's shaman" for his congressional run in Arizona's 8th District. Despite his notoriety and the challenges in a GOP-dominated area, he aims to address systemic issues and financial mismanagement in politics. Angeli-Chansley, running as a Libertarian, has yet to confirm his eligibility and faces an uphill battle against established Republican candidates, opting not to take campaign funding for his grassroots-focused bid.

Ongoing Tragic Teen Incidents

A tragic incident occurred in Guadalupe, Arizona, where a confrontation at a local party escalated into a violent stabbing. In the early hours of Saturday morning, at the intersection of Priest Drive and Guadalupe Road, an altercation broke out during a party, leading to a violent clash in a driveway.

A 15-year-old boy tragically lost his life after being stabbed and rushed to the hospital. Two other boys, aged 19 and 14, were also stabbed but are currently in stable condition. Additionally, a 46-year-old man sought medical treatment for injuries related to blunt force trauma.

The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) responded to the scene and arrested a 14-year-old boy in connection with the stabbing. The identities of those involved have not been disclosed by MCSO, and the investigation is ongoing. The local community is awaiting further updates to understand the full circumstances of this heartbreaking incident
