Gilbert arts group mounts a special show-sale

In the vibrant heart of Gilbert, Arizona, the Gilbert Visual Art League (GVAL) is hosting its 21st annual juried fine art show and sale, a testament to the flourishing art scene in the East Valley. From February 17 to March 23, Gallery 4 at HD South will become a nexus of creativity, showcasing at least 99 diverse pieces of art ranging from paintings and drawings to photography and sculpture. This event, meticulously organized by league members Peter Eobbi and Mary Opat, represents a culmination of effort to bring the visual arts to the forefront of the community's cultural experience.
Since its inception in 2003, GVAL has evolved from a small group of artists to a vibrant nonprofit organization, now boasting a membership of 75. The league caters to a wide spectrum of participants, from art enthusiasts and hobbyists to professional artists, offering an array of benefits including educational presentations, exhibition opportunities, and community involvement projects. A significant aspect of GVAL's mission is its community service, with members actively teaching art classes to both adults and children in local institutions.
The league's annual art show has become a hallmark event, drawing attention and visitors eager to immerse themselves in the local art scene. This year's submissions, exceeding 100, were meticulously judged to present a collection that highlights the diverse talent within the area. Yet, despite its successes, GVAL faces challenges such as the need for additional board members and the quest for more spacious exhibition venues, underscoring a growing need for support and recognition from the broader Gilbert community.
Artists like Heather Coen, Christina Rosepapa, and Donna Finter, among others, contribute significantly to the league's dynamism, bringing their unique visions and experiences to the collective. Their works, ranging from expressive art inspired by Arizona's wilderness to detailed oil paintings and mixed media, underscore the rich tapestry of creativity that GVAL nurtures. As the league looks to the future, its members remain committed to enhancing the visual arts landscape in Gilbert, advocating for greater exposure and support to transform the town into a cultural beacon in the region.
Gilbert police awarded state safety grants

The Gilbert Police Department has recently been the beneficiary of significant grant funding from the Arizona Governorβs Office of Highway Safety (AZGOHS), aimed at bolstering its traffic unit's enforcement capabilities and training. For the 2024 federal fiscal year, the department has been allocated additional resources to enhance DUI enforcement, pedestrian and bicycle safety, selective traffic enforcement, and specialized training for accident investigations. This financial boost is set to extend the capacity of officers to dedicate more hours to these critical areas, beyond their standard operational commitments.
The grants are structured to address various operational needs within the department. A portion of the funds, amounting to $93,918, is designated for personnel services including overtime and specialized training focused on DUI enforcement. To support the Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP), $70,000 will cover personnel services, with an additional $7,671 allocated for the acquisition of Lidar devices, which are essential for speed enforcement. Furthermore, $8,285 is earmarked for professional services related to training for accident investigation, while $6,460 is allocated towards efforts aimed at reducing pedestrian and bicycle fatalities through enforcement, education, and public awareness initiatives in Gilbert.
In total, the Gilbert Police Department has been awarded $186,334 in grant funds. This financial injection is not only a testament to the department's commitment to enhancing road safety and law enforcement efficacy but also highlights the ongoing partnership with AZGOHS in promoting safer communities. The management and utilization of these funds are subject to continuous monitoring, with quarterly reports submitted to AZGOHS to ensure transparency and accountability in their deployment. This strategic funding initiative promises to enhance the Gilbert Police Department's operational effectiveness, particularly in traffic enforcement and safety education, thereby contributing to the well-being and security of Gilbert residents.

Arizona Eyes Electric Vehicle Fee to Replace Lost Gas Tax Revenue

In a significant move by Arizona's House Committee on Transportation and Technology, a proposal has been put forward to introduce a new annual registration fee of $135 for electric vehicles (EVs) that do not run on gasoline or diesel. This initiative, aimed at electric vehicles, primarily targets the 80,613 plug-in electric vehicles currently registered in the state. This fee is expected to generate approximately $11 million annually for road maintenance and construction, compensating for the absence of gas tax contributions from these vehicle owners.
The rationale behind the $135 fee is based on the average gas consumption of a typical motorist, which is calculated on the premise that a vehicle with a fuel efficiency of 20 miles per gallon would require about 750 gallons of gas for 15,000 miles of travel annually, equating the gas tax to $135. The proposal, known as HB 2866, passed the committee with a narrow 5-4 vote but faces further challenges, including the need for a two-thirds majority vote in both the House and Senate due to its nature as a new tax.
Representative David Cook introduced the fee as a preferable alternative to a per-mile tax, which would involve monitoring the mileage of EV owners. Additionally, another measure, HCR 2018, aims to prohibit any form of mileage-based tax or fee and was approved by the committee with a 6-5 vote. This measure also seeks to prevent any limitations on travel distance, reflecting concerns about preserving the freedom of mobility.
Representative Travis Grantham, a proponent of HCR 2018, emphasized the importance of the freedom to travel and expressed concerns over potential restrictions on vehicle usage as part of a broader agenda to encourage alternative transportation methods. Despite these concerns, Grantham supports Cook's registration fee proposal, acknowledging the necessity of funding road maintenance and recognizing the increasing wear and tear on roads by electric vehicles.
The growing trend of electric vehicle adoption in Arizona, which has more than doubled from less than 35,000 three years ago to over 80,000, underscores the challenge of sustaining road maintenance funding through traditional fuel taxes. With the state's fuel tax revenue not keeping pace with inflation despite an increase in fuel efficiency, Arizona is at a crossroads in reevaluating its road funding model amidst a shift towards more sustainable transportation options.
