Gilbert, Arizona Celebrates Service Members with Military Tribute Banner Program

In an annual gesture of respect and recognition, Gilbert, Arizona, is bringing back its cherished military tribute banner program. This initiative offers residents a unique opportunity to honor both current and former military personnel by purchasing full-color banners. These tributes will grace the downtown heritage district of Gilbert, standing as a proud reminder of the bravery and sacrifice of local heroes.
The banners, costing $130 each, are designed to celebrate the individual stories of service members. They will prominently feature the honoree's photograph, alongside their branch of service, rank, service dates, and the family name, among other details. Measuring 24” x 47”, these banners are not only a testament to personal valor but also a vivid display of community pride.
Scheduled to be showcased during key patriotic holidays—Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Veterans Day—the banners ensure that the spirit of these occasions is visually amplified. Availability is limited, adhering to a first-come, first-served policy, underlining the exclusivity of this tribute.
After the display period, sponsors will have the privilege of retaining their banners, allowing the honor to continue in a more personal setting. Those interested in participating have until March 31st to secure their spot and purchase a banner. 10th annual Design for Dogs event to benefit homeless animals in the Valley Feb. 23

Local talents in architecture, interior design, and home construction are channeling their creativity into designing innovative dog shelters for the 10th annual Design for Dogs fundraiser. This unique event supports the Arizona Animal Welfare League (AAWL) and showcases a competition where design teams craft the ideal doghouse. These bespoke shelters will then be auctioned, with proceeds going towards AAWL's vital services such as affordable vaccinations, rescue operations in rural areas, and their community veterinary clinic.
Scheduled for 5 to 9 p.m. on Friday, February 23, at the Facings of America showroom in Scottsdale, this event invites participants to bring their design A-game. This year's challenge has welcomed back ten "All Star" teams, all of whom have previously participated, to construct and donate luxurious doghouses. The funds raised from the auction contribute significantly to AAWL, Arizona's foremost and largest no-kill shelter, ensuring over 4,000 homeless pets find shelter annually.
The evening offers guests the chance to vote for the "Best of Show," bid on their favorite doghouses, win raffle prizes, and indulge in craft cocktails and snacks. It also provides a perfect opportunity to meet some of AAWL's charming, adoptable dogs. Since its inception in 2015 by Facings of America, the Design for Dogs event has been a platform for local professionals to display extraordinary doghouse designs, blending form, function, and philanthropy.
The Facings of America showroom will transform into a gallery of unique doghouses available for auction. The event promises an engaging atmosphere with music, raffle draws, and the company of lovable dogs seeking homes. Attendees will enjoy two complimentary drinks from local vendors with their ticket purchase.
Tickets are available at $55 for general admission. For additional information and to secure a ticket, interested individuals can visit designfordogs.org.

Old Town Scottsdale’s 1st microdistillery opens in former Blue Clover Distillery space

A refreshing twist in Old Town Scottsdale's beverage scene has emerged with the opening of One Handsome Bastard, a new microdistillery that promises a unique blend of local craftsmanship and heartfelt tribute. Located at 7042 E Indian School Rd., a spot previously known for Blue Clover Distillery, this establishment has embarked on a journey under its provocative new name, signaling a fresh direction and ambition.
In partnership with Blue Clover Spirits, One Handsome Bastard is crafting small-batch gin and vodka right on the premises, ensuring each bottle is a testament to their dedication to quality and innovation. The venture is led by the dynamic mother-daughter duo, Trish and Bren Ritchie, who have infused the distillery with a deeply personal mission. Named in honor of Brad Ritchie, a beloved family member and enthusiast of spirits who passed away from cancer in 2022, the distillery embodies his spirit of fearlessness and confidence. Embracing his humorous self-compliment, "That is one handsome bastard," the name serves as a loving homage and a declaration of the brand's bold character.
Moreover, One Handsome Bastard is committed to making a difference beyond the world of spirits. A portion of the profits from their vodka sales will be donated to a local nonprofit dedicated to cancer research and support, reflecting a commitment to community and the fight against cancer.
The distillery itself is a haven for spirit lovers, offering meticulously crafted spirits that move seamlessly from still to bottle. Utilizing a specialized reverse osmosis system paired with a high-quality charcoal filter, the distillery ensures the superior taste of their vodka and gin. Visitors can also enjoy craft cocktails, bar food, and the modern-industrial ambiance of the space, complete with Edison bulbs, a concrete bar, and views of the copper distilling equipment. An outdoor patio and sliding garage doors add to the inviting atmosphere.

A Beacon of Light: How Skylar's Adoption and The Lost Enzyme Project Inspire Hope

Skylar, a cherished addition to her family since she was a month old, has been a source of joy despite facing the profound challenges of Beta-mannosidosis, diagnosed just before her first birthday. This rare genetic disorder has led to developmental delays, difficulty swallowing, recurrent infections, severe peripheral neuropathy, and significant vision and hearing loss for Skylar. Her resilience shines through as she enjoys playful moments with her siblings, particularly her best friend and older brother, Charlie. In a significant milestone, Skylar was officially adopted into her loving family last May, marking a new chapter of togetherness and hope.

Despite the progression of her condition, which now includes difficulty walking, legal blindness, profound hearing loss, chronic infections, and excruciating pain from Erythromelalgia, Skylar's family has been a steadfast source of support. The initial outlook for treatment was bleak, given the rarity of Beta-mannosidosis, limited scientific interest, and funding challenges.
However, hope emerged with the inception of The Lost Enzyme Project, a collaborative effort between affected families, the University of California Irvine Foundation, Kimonis Laboratory, and JCR Pharmaceuticals, alongside a partnership with the Sanford University CoRDS Program. This initiative aims to develop a novel enzyme replacement therapy through fundraising efforts targeting $520,925.00 by August 1, 2025, for crucial preclinical studies and research. The project not only seeks to pioneer treatment for Beta-mannosidosis but also to unify the global community affected by this disorder.
For more details on this life-saving endeavor and to view an informative video, please visit bit.ly/lostenzyme. Contributions to the project are tax-deductible and go directly towards research and development efforts for a treatment that promises a brighter future for Skylar and others with Beta-mannosidosis.
Malevo: Argentina's Dance Phenomenon Debuts in Arizona with a Spectacular Fusion Show

The captivating Argentine show, Malevo, is set to enchant audiences at The Madison Center for the Arts in Phoenix, Arizona. This highly anticipated event marks Malevo's debut performance in Arizona, scheduled for Friday, February 23, at 7 p.m. Featuring a dynamic all-male ensemble accompanied by a live band, Malevo brings an innovative twist to the traditional Malambo dance by blending it with elements of urban percussion and various dance styles including flamenco, tango, and Irish step dance. This unique fusion not only expands the boundaries of Malambo but also offers a mesmerizing visual and auditory experience that stands out in the theatrical landscape.
Having earned the title of an official cultural ambassador for Argentina's National Identity, Malevo has garnered acclaim on international stages in cities such as Las Vegas, New York, Paris, and London. Their collaborations with stars like Ricky Martin and appearances on shows like America's Got Talent and with Cirque du Soleil highlight their global appeal and versatility. The brainchild of Matías Jaime, Malevo reimagines the traditional Argentine Malambo, which originated as a competitive dance among the Gauchos of the Pampas region. By integrating modern elements and other dance styles with the powerful and skillful essence of Malambo, the group has created a groundbreaking performance style.
Their performances are characterized by intense drumming rhythms and the use of boleadoras, a traditional hunting tool, alongside rapid footwork and spirited stomping, all of which contribute to an electrifying atmosphere. Ari Levin, the executive director of The Madison Center of the Arts, expressed excitement about hosting Malevo, citing the group's passionate drumming, explosive dance, and dramatic theatrics as reasons this event is a must-see.
Tickets for Malevo are available for purchase online at themadison.org or by calling the box office at 602-664-7777. The Madison Center for the Arts is located in Phoenix at 5601 N. 16th St.
